GENERAL INFORMATION
1. Entry Requirements. Entry forms must be returned to the appropriate Section Secretary by 11th October 2010 in order for the administration to be completed. Please include an email address which will be used to contact entrants and inform them about the details of their class (if this is not possible please enclose a stamped addressed A5 envelope (22 x 16 cm) and the details will be posted). Cheques should be made payable to “Farnham Competitive Music Festival”. Please do not use Recorded Deliveries because they cause more delay and inconvenience if the recipient is not at home. Details of class number and time will be sent approximately two weeks before the Festival begins.
2. The competitions are for amateurs only, except in the classes marked “Open”. Amateurs are defined as those who have never received any payment for performing or teaching the subject of their class. In Ensemble classes, every performer must satisfy the conditions above. Conductors of any group and accompanists in the solo classes are the only exceptions to this rule.
3. A system of standards of achievement is used by the Adjudicators. Certificates and Adjudicators’ reports will be given as usual. The standards are as follows:-
OUTSTANDING: Performed with distinguished artistry and musicianship
EXCELLENT: Very well developed technical and musical performance
VERY GOOD: A well-prepared, accurate and fluent performance
GOOD: A promising performance with some understanding and facility
COMPETENT: An acceptable level of performance
INSECURE: No certificate will be awarded if the above qualities are lacking
4. In classes limited by age, age should be taken as at 1st September 2010.
5. OWN CHOICE. A copy of “Own Choice” pieces must be handed to the Adjudicator’s steward before performing. The Music Publishers’ Association Code of Practice on Photocopying Copyright Works makes the following concession. Own-choice pieces can be photocopied from volumes, only for the use of the Adjudicator at a Festival, provided that the entrant or participant has already purchased his/her own copy and that the copy made is retained and destroyed by the Administrator of the Festival immediately after the event. This permission specifically does not apply to set works. Single copies of items may not be photocopied without the prior permission of the copyright holder.
6. The title and timing of Own Choice pieces must be stated on the Entry Form. Forms received without these details will not be accepted.
7. Competitors may not submit the same piece twice and once entered they may not change their piece without consultation with the Section Secretary.
8. The Adjudicator may stop a performance at his discretion, and the time limit will be strictly enforced. It is forbidden to communicate with the Adjudicator.
9. The Committee reserves the right to amalgamate any class in which only one entry is received.
10. Winners of a medal for Junior or Intermediate Recital classes and winners of a Young Musician Award for Senior Recital classes are not allowed to enter that class again in subsequent years.
11. If pieces are accompanied by an instrument other than a piano, the accompanist must be clearly in a secondary supporting role and positioned behind the soloist.
Entrants invited to perform in the Concert should ensure an accompanist is available.
12. Any breach of the regulations will mean disqualification. The Committee reserves the right to add to the above, or interpret or qualify any of the foregoing rules as occasion may arise.
13. The Festival’s Child Protection Policy is printed in the Syllabus and Festival Programme.
14. If an accompanist is required, please contact the General Secretary for suggestions.
15. Arrangements can be made to accommodate disabled participants.
While the Festival seeks to work in partnership with parents, carers and teachers to ensure a safe environment as far as is reasonably practicable, the responsibility for children under 18 rests with their parents and carers. The Festival's Child Protection Policy requires parents and guardians not attending in person to be satisfied that their children will be accompanied to the festival and adequately supervised by responsible adults acting on their behalf.
